Amazon.com Review
Got a problem with grout? Open The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair (to page 98) and watch your tiling worries dissolve before the simple beauty of photography. Black & Decker has anticipated your every question and problem with interior, exterior, and home systems repairs, and detailed the solutions in just over 500 pages. In no other human endeavor is a visual guide so important as home repair (well, maybe brain surgery), so this is a crucial aid to the handyperson. Easy-to-find sections on floors, insulation, roofing, chimneys, water heaters, wall switches, air conditioning, and much more are well-designed, brilliantly illustrated, and carefully outlined with step-by-step instructions from masters. The photos in particular are extremely valuable, offering many different views (sometimes even exploded) of the operation in question, and always showing just enough to communicate without overwhelming the reader with too much detail. These alone would be worth the price of the book, but the written explanations and instructions are also very helpful, offering tools, materials lists, and hints that wouldn't occur to the amateur. The book finishes with a maintenance schedule to help you keep repairs from becoming serious, and the end papers have conversion charts and tables that you'll use time and again. If you can't have Norm the master carpenter over to help you fix your old house, The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair is the next best thing. --Rob Lightner

Customer Reviews:

 • Great Book
13 November, 2009

I Searched a lot for the right DIY book and this was the best option I found. I liked the pictures and the advice. I thought it very thorough. Of coruse things don't always go as easy or smooth as discussed in the book, but that is hardly the book's fault.

Gave this to my son, a new home owner, as a Christmas gift. I like it because the photos help you understand what you are doing.

 • Best On The Market, But Not As Good As The 2004 Version.
20 January, 2010

The new 2008 edition of Black and Decker's Home Repair continues the tradition of excellent photography and comprehensive coverage of the vast majority of common, and not so common, home repairs. While the new version reorders some text and changes some photography to make the book more readable it does suffer compared to the 2004 edition in two respects. The 2008 version leaves out several significant chapters on basic tool skills, common tool sets, and small projects (such as building a workbench) that would assist the home repair do-it-yourselfer and focuses solely on the by task repair descriptions. For the novice DIY'er the loss of text describing different nails, how to work power tools, etc. could be significant and remains in the main competitor to the volume, The Readers Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual. Also the page stock and binding while thick and excellent in the 2008 version will no longer open flat as in the 2004 version making the text more difficult to set out next to your project for reference. The 2008 version retains all the excellent photos and text descriptions of countless home repairs but removes important ancillary information and quality of binding that truly put previous versions of this book over the top. Highly recommended but if you can get the 2004 version that may be a better option...
